Task 1: Feeling

Discrimination

The area of Kringlan, one of the most visited places in the city, the location of Kringlan shopping center, a number of companies, high schools and restaurants that many people visit every day.

The area is not in line with modern conditions in society when it comes to environmental considerations, but it was designed for the private car. Around the block you can find three bus stops, two of which are connected to the city line. Access from public transport around the area is not good.

Unwelcome was the strongest feeling we felt when walking around the area due to discrimination against private cars and pedestrians.

The models show the accessibility of cars and the area that accommodates parking vs. the main access routes for pedestrians from puplic transports and nearest neighborhoods also places for them to enjoy. But we want to draw attention to the great imbalance.

Mismunun

PHASE 3 - DESIGNING KRINGLAN

        TASK 6 - SHAPING POLITICS
        &
        TASK 7 - DESIGNING CONCEPT

Tíminn og vatnið

We want Kringlan area to be a healthy carbon negative space.
We want to try to regain a part of the wetlands that once was in the area. Wetlands are one of Iceland’s most crucial actions to fight climate change by capturing CO2 from the atmo- sphere. Greenery will also help with CO2 along with the wet- lands, and they will help maintain biodiversity in the area.
We want to repurpose most existing buildings in the area and materials from the small portion we need to tear down will be reused as much as possible and the rest recycled. All buld- ings will be adaptable for the future and made from environ- mentally friendly materials that capture CO2 from the air.
We want to minimize traffic in the area by putting the inter- section og Kringlumýrarbraut and Miklabraut underground and focusing on public transport. Thereby we are reducing air and noise pollution, the safety off the habitants and bet- ter connections to the other neighborhoods around.
We want healthy living spaces with green gardens where res- idents will be able to grow their own food and connect to nature in the middle of the city.
We want to create flexible public and private spaces with consideration for wind, sunlight and shadow formation.
We want to help empower the whole city, and hopefully the whole country, to make a change.
