Connected Living

Connect living is a rehabilitation clinic where residence can heal in a non-clinical environment. The project aims to create a connection to animals, nature and others. It’s been proven just be simply increasing the time we spend outdoors (no major activity required) are mental health and wellbeing sees improvement. This remains the same with animals and there is no greater calm being than the Icelandic horse. Praised around the world for their calm nature and unique attributes not exhibited in any other horses.

There are two forms of horse therapy, mental and physical. The latter of which is already being explored in this area. Currently the horses are working with MS patients. The horse can be ridden without a staddle allowing for patient’s legs to hang freely. The heat of the horse will travel up through the patent’s spine, which can offer some comfort. With an already established grounding this project aims to work alongside this company and further expanded upon it.

The proposal is a rehabilitation centre which can house 6 in a spacious humane space. Residence have on site access to the horse for daily chores meaning it would only take a short 2 minute walk to the stables where they can interact with the horses. Gaining a personal relationship with these horses can bring a sense of calm into one’s life.

The building itself is navigated under a series of roofscapes. Through spaces are created which encourage the exploration of the outdoors while bearing in mind the ruthless Icelandic climate. Another method of tackling these strong winds is by locating the scheme in a small naturally occurring dip in the landscape. The steep slope sides carrying the wind over the scheme. Reducing the wind is incredibly important since a courtyard typology residence will be outdoors circulating the space. The defining feature of the form of the building is the exaggerated sloped skylights. This comes form idea of promoting self-reflection. The roof guides your eyes up to the sky creating a moment of pause, borrowing this technique form churches.

The program is kept simple in order to not over stimulate the residence. The plan consists of; Admin space, support space for staff, bedrooms/w ensuite and lounge, general assembly space, shared kitchen/dining/living space and quiet reflection space. Working together these spaces build a relationship with each other helping to promote connected living.

Taking a closer look at the general assembly space. This room is extremely flexible with no fixed components. This means the space can be a great tool to provide connection to the wider community. For example, the space can run workshop, cooking, yoga classes from local business, providing long term skills to the residence and strengthen this projects relationship to its wider context.
