In the Master Plan for 2030, Höfðar will be deeply tranformed: 6,200 new residential units will be built and ultimately support a population of over 15,000 inhabitants.&#38;nbsp;&#60;img width="2480" height="1753" width_o="2480" height_o="1753" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c37b5a3688390294acbef01f4c6f6ebb0680dc24a4ec9b0ba2a3d1bfcd80647f/arkis.jpg" data-mid="55683267" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c37b5a3688390294acbef01f4c6f6ebb0680dc24a4ec9b0ba2a3d1bfcd80647f/arkis.jpg" /&#62;
Proposed plan of Höfðar for 2030&#38;nbsp;This massive transformations give us the opportunity to designing Höfðar and reflecting upon contemporary urban living, to rethink the relationship among us and nature. A manifesto that embodies these intentions has been developed and it reads like this:

The Manifesto for Höfðar

 Bigger context
When developing Höfði we should consider what purpose the area can serve in a bigger context. Reykjavík has been planned around the cars’ idea, which includes zoning and urban sprawl. This has created many problems both in urban planning as well societal. Höfði offers a good opportunity to reverse this development. The location of Höfði, close to the centre point of the urban area of Reykjavík, as well as the large unbuilt area, are important conditions for these changes.

What are the effects that Höfði should have on Reykjavík / Iceland / Earth?

A different transportation culture
Höfði will be the first area in Reykjavík to be developed with borgarlína (bus rapid transit system) in mind. It is important that we take radical steps in making borgarlína the first choice of transportation for most of the inhabitants of Höfði. We want to change the transportation culture of Reykjavík and to do that we need to create a walkable environment.

Organic evolution of a community
To create this sort of neighbourhood we need to make sure that certain essential services are present in a walking distance. The challenge is to integrate new residential dwellings within an existing environment. We want to create an opportunity for more diversity in the area, to achieve this we need to design adaptable architecture that is an architecture that is open to transformation and for a variety of services to evolve in an organic way.

Nature in everyday life
We want to make nature a part of everyday life of the people of Höfði. Nature can be translated in different forms: urban agriculture, coastal walks, riparian ecosystems. We would like nature to serve a purpose in the infrastructure of the area and in improving public spaces. The local geology, flora, fauna and ocean must all be taken into consideration.
With development there is always a certain disturbance of the ecosystem. We emphasize the importance of minimizing this disturbance. We need to be aware of the climate crisis and of its irreversible effects on cities and nature.

Green construction
We need to demand higher environmental and ethical standards not just in terms of materials and energy consumption but also in terms of processes and labour conditions. It is also important to consider the ecological and social benefit of repurposing buildings as a more ecological and social just way to imagine the future.

The effect of Höfði
It is clear to everyone that a societal change of behaviour is needed if we wish to prevent the worst-case scenario predicted by climate scientists. The effects of Höfði from an environmental perspective are limited, however we can create a model of ecological and ethical living. Iceland could lead the way into the future for radical experimentation in the way cities are planned and constructed.

Thirteen stories have been consequently developed by the second year students in architecture at the Iceland University of the Arts.
This is one of them.
This project is called Virðisauki.

In times of climate change, building materials are difficult to find in line with environmentally friendly solutions that the future calls for. Added-Value adresses how we can use what we already have, to give it higher values - socially, environmentally and economically. There are numerous containers in Höfði that do not appear to be in use. Their reusage can however open up new opportunities. For each recycled container, a considerable amount of steel can be saved, and the carbon footprint resulting from relocating them and casting them in form of new buildings is therefore reduced dramatically. Having in mind the importance of the environment, of minimising costs, and a strong community, a new neighborhood is consequently designed to offer living conditions and services that are sustainable, socially, friendly, and financially advantageous. The neighborhood will offer facilities that encourages residents to live more sustainable lifestyles with upcycle workshops and cultivation areas for food-production along with services and flexible community’s spaces. All of this is connected by a pedestrian street that links the old silos to the coastline, passing through the neighborhood core.

Proposed plan of Höfðar for 2030 This massive transformations give us the opportunity to designing Höfðar and reflecting upon contemporary urban living, to rethink the relationship among us and nature. A manifesto that embodies these intentions has been developed and it reads like this:

The Manifesto for Höfðar

 Bigger contextWhen developing Höfði we should consider what purpose the area can serve in a bigger context.

A different transportation cultureHöfði will be the first area in Reykjavík to be developed with borgarlína (bus rapid transit system) in mind. It is important that we take radical steps in making borgarlína the first choice of transportation for most of the inhabitants of Höfði. We want to change the transportation culture of Reykjavík and to do that we need to create a walkable environment.

Organic evolution of a communityTo create this sort of neighbourhood we need to make sure that certain essential services are present in a walking distance. The challenge is to integrate new residential dwellings within an existing environment. We want to create an opportunity for more diversity in the area, to achieve this we need to design adaptable architecture that is an architecture that is open to transformation and for a variety of services to evolve in an organic way.

Nature in everyday lifeWe want to make nature a part of everyday life of the people of Höfði. Nature can be translated in different forms: urban agriculture, coastal walks, riparian ecosystems. We would like nature to serve a purpose in the infrastructure of the area and in improving public spaces. The local geology, flora, fauna and ocean must all be taken into consideration.With development there is always a certain disturbance of the ecosystem. We emphasize the importance of minimizing this disturbance. We need to be aware of the climate crisis and of its irreversible effects on cities and nature.

Green constructionWe need to demand higher environmental and ethical standards not just in terms of materials and energy consumption but also in terms of processes and labour conditions. It is also important to consider the ecological and social benefit of repurposing buildings as a more ecological and social just way to imagine the future.

The effect of HöfðiIt is clear to everyone that a societal change of behaviour is needed if we wish to prevent the worst-case scenario predicted by climate scientists. The effects of Höfði from an environmental perspective are limited, however we can create a model of ecological and ethical living. Iceland could lead the way into the future for radical experimentation in the way cities are planned and constructed.

Thirteen stories have been consequently developed by the second year students in architecture at the Iceland University of the Arts.This is one of them.

The Old Cement Factory

The Old Cement Factory is the most iconic and recognizable building in the area of Höfði. This unique artefact was dismissed 10 years ago, when the cement production stopped. Ever since, it seems that everything has been solidified in time. The experience upon entering it is unique: gloomy, magical, and grey. It is an experience like no others, filled with beauty. There is a raw and pure purpose for its existence. The cement dust covers everything: the walls, the floor, the windows, creating a wonderful opalescent light inside the building. An old photograph, a calendar and some personal belongings are the only human traces left here. Two dead birds covered in cement’s dust lie on concrete floor they already look like casts for a museum. An endless stairwell intensifies the curiosity of a visitor to go up to the top of the building where a magnificent view embraces you: the ocean, the city of Reykjavik.

This building is a symbol of urban growth in Iceland. A growing economy and the pride of former generations. It provided a material that gave us good, stable houses which protect us against the harsh weather conditions: the cement. But also, it is a symbol of how the earth has been robbed of its limestone, clay, and the limited natural resources. This raises a question: how can we make things better? How can we develop without the exploitation and exhaustion of natural resources? In our manifesto for Höfða we write: “Green construction; We need to demand an environmental standard that is thought of as unrealistic today in order to put pressure on finding the solutions that we need. Therefore, we need to consider ways to repurpose buildings and prevent unnecessary demolishing of buildings. “ In order to fulfil these goals, I want to repurpose this cement factory by using again old materials present on the site and introducing new ones made of mycelium, a thick mass of mushroom threads which grow in the earth. The mushroom is mixed with sawdust and organic material. Mycelium can form an incredibly strong material that is not only water-resistant, but also fire and mould resistant. It can be grown and transformed into building blocks of different shapes that are 100% organic and compostable, with a consistency that is stronger than concrete when compared pound for pound. This material is not only sturdy, resilient, and bulletproof, but it can withstand extreme temperatures, and when its lifetime is over the material can be easily composted. („Mycelium: The future of building with mushrooms and organics. “ Build Abroad. 6. May 2020 https://buildabroad.org/2016/10/12/mycelium/)

Through this strange time in history where humans must find a way out of appalling ecological devastation, we must have a place where surreal and unthinkable circumstances can take place, and where we can dream for a better future. A space to push boundaries and come together as citizens of the world, to build a community that can take care of our shared environment and culture. The Old Cement Factory will become a place of memory and a place of art, a place of play and a place to come together and observe the nature that surrounds our city and reflect on our responsibilities to care for the world.

		<description>IV. Höfðar, Recondition, 2020

Arnar Skarphéðinsson — arnar18 (at) lhi.is&#38;nbsp;

The context of the design course Urban Lab - Design Agency for the academic year 2019-2020 is the area of Höfðar which is located in Reykjavik.

The Manifesto for Höfðar

 Bigger contextWhen developing Höfði we should consider what purpose the area can serve in a bigger context.

RECONDITION, Arnar Skarphéðinsson
Designing new systems using current and future technology is necessary. A world where human civilization&#38;nbsp;isn’t wiped out by&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;climate crisis&#38;nbsp;will have&#38;nbsp;some kind of a&#38;nbsp;man-made&#38;nbsp;appearance, every aspect of it&#38;nbsp;has to&#38;nbsp;look like something. Transportation, energy extraction, buildings etc. It is the job of architects to imagine how every aspect of this world looks like. The architectural profession must change for this to be possible. Today it&#38;nbsp;legitimizes&#38;nbsp;a destructive economic system&#38;nbsp;.&#38;nbsp;Profit&#38;nbsp;maximization&#38;nbsp;for private unaccountable tyrannies should never be the job of an architect or anyone else for that matter.

This project starts about questioning the distribution of goods. Today the distribution is controlled by unaccountable private corporations using energy inefficient and segregated modes of transportation. These transportation methods are accompanied by a massive infrastructure that is not designed for humans to use. Soon our distribution system will change, instead of consumers entering a grocery store and collecting goods, they will be transported to consumers. Our current leading neoliberal theory will lead us to replace our existing system with a new profit maximizing system. Drones owned and manufactured by private corporations, designed to be obsolete every other year so that a newer version can be bought. Flying from warehouses also owned by private corporations that seek profit. My proposal comes from an imaginary world where technology is used to benefit the public, not to maximize the profits of a few individuals.

For a distribution system to benefit the public first, its mechanisms of movement must be public. The Borgarlína,&#38;nbsp;which is the new public transport system for the city of Reykjavík is therefore&#38;nbsp;imagined as a train&#38;nbsp;what will not only move passengers but also&#38;nbsp;goods. This&#38;nbsp;will&#38;nbsp;eliminate the need for private corporations to work as&#38;nbsp;middlemen in the distribution system of food.&#38;nbsp;When systems and ideologies become architecture they solidify in society, for example in Reykjavík the automobile is considered the main mode of transport because our infrastructure reflects that value. Water pipes are another example, we believe it is our right to have essentially free running water in our homes. Neoliberal theory would make us get rid of these water pipes and exclusively sell bottled water, so it is the infrastructure itself that guarantees our rights.&#38;nbsp;Public space is the most powerful weapon that we have against excessive privatization.

An abandoned prefab&#38;nbsp;concrete unit factory&#38;nbsp;occupies the site of my intervention.&#38;nbsp;My project&#38;nbsp;repurposes&#38;nbsp;the factory by&#38;nbsp;dismantling&#38;nbsp;its units and by&#38;nbsp;rearranging&#38;nbsp;them to form a large complex that will host public services and&#38;nbsp;a new student housing building. This building&#38;nbsp;sits on the north edge of a new public square that borders with the new&#38;nbsp;borgarlína&#38;nbsp;station. The station therefore&#38;nbsp;serves both as passengers' terminal and as&#38;nbsp;a&#38;nbsp;food delivery station.&#38;nbsp;

Technologies effects are not pre-determined, but when the ruling power of a society sees nothing except for profit maximization&#38;nbsp;it is easy to deduce what power will do with technology. There is no hope right now and there shouldn’t be any as long as our prospects for survival become bleaker by the day, architects and city planners produce false hope that serves power systems when they present&#38;nbsp;seemingly&#38;nbsp;progressive ideas that don’t get at the heart of our collective problem which is an economic system designed to drain resources and expand inequality. Architects must rebel against this system if they truly want change.

This
project, called Gamla Steypustöðin (e. The Old Concrete Factory), is a plea to
save an abandoned structure and reimagine
its possibilities. I aim to allow what has
been used to create the built environment of the capital area to become a hub
which builds up the communities in Höfði. This project is less about
preservation and more about evolution.

Let
us prevent tearing down the old structure and throwing it away. Prevent having
to manufacture excessive new building materials for what will most likely be a generic replacement.
The environmental impact is not compensated for by the “improved” usability. In keeping the old structure all
materials will be reused or repurposed to the furthest extent possible.
Concrete that is dug up or torn down will be reused to build smaller
structures.

Its
location in relation to Borgarlína is in many ways ideal. It is within walking
distance of both the main station and the smaller stop to the west.
On either side, rammaskipulag (the planning framework of Reykjavik) has planned green areas which have little-to-no overlap. This project connects the two areas to each other
as well as creating an entrance from the main street. It enhances walking and
cycling pathways to create a more dynamic and interactive environment.
Playgrounds for younger and older children, open spaces that allow for markets,
smaller buildings with shops that have a view of the playgrounds, a
skateboarding area carved out of the concrete ground, public access to the
outside area of the old building, benches to rest weary feet.&#38;nbsp;

Almost
all design decisions
involving the original structure were influenced by
the way those spaces were used historically.
The chemical additive stockroom becomes a soup restaurant where the customers
create their own recipes. The pumping room becomes a dishwashing station and
the mixing becomes the kitchen. The old sand conveyor belt that leads to the top of the tower is converted to a human conveyer
belt which ends on a viewing platform. On the other tower, the top floor
becomes a coffee shop, as there was a mixer and grinder there before. The
insulated areas where humans worked in the past will once again become working
areas. The unconventional setting as well as relatively small rooms, in
comparison to the warehouses which are common in Höfði, are perfect for people
of creativity. All areas that have become nesting spots for birds will continue
to be so. In this way the birds decide which areas become truly preserved. The only addition being made to the old structure is a stair
and lift tower to aid in circulation, with
ramps that connect the two towers together.

Gamla
Steypustöðin is an ode to the industrial heritage of the area. Its bare
functionalism creates fantasy-like spaces not
found in commercial architecture. It has stood for decades, withstanding the
wear and tear of concrete production. It stands ready to keep evolving and to
take on a new challenge.

The context of the design course Urban Lab - Design Agency for the academic year 2019-2020 is the area of Höfðar which is located in Reykjavik.

Map of Reykjavik with Höfðar in evidence
Höfðar hosts 2,751 inhabitants and more of 300 activities which altogether offer employment to thousands of people.
Map of Höfðar54% of the surface of Höfðar is covered by water repellent materials which interfere with the natural water flow.Water repellent surface in Höfðar There are 8,764 parking lots in Höfðar which altogether cover a surface of 109,550 square metres.Map of the parking places in Höfðar By directly observing their usage it is discovered that on average only 50% of them is in use. Map of the use of the parking places in Höfðar These information tells us that a new plan for Höfðar must be envisioned one that is ecologically robust and socially vibrant.In the Master Plan for 2030, Höfðar will be deeply tranformed: 6,200 new residential units will be built and ultimately support a population of over 15,000 inhabitants.

Jónskirkja is a church and cultural center at Sævarhöfði 12, 110 Reykjavík. Today it is a Truck Service Center, and before it was an industrial pipe factory.

The location is unique due to the building being split between the upper and lower part of Höfði. The building is located at the edge of the original shoreline, where the ocean once broke upon.&#38;nbsp;

The building has two wings. The main wing stretches north, like a pier that faces the ocean, ready to welcome everyone. The building is made from a steel structure, but the top section attached to the cliff is made of concrete. I decided to keep the structure and the concrete part and build upon what was before.&#38;nbsp;

I am looking to blur the line between inside and outside, between nature and structure. My goal is not to invade the nature around, but to highlight it, and create a harmony between nature and man-made&#38;nbsp;structure. The inspiration comes from a story written by&#38;nbsp;Halldór&#38;nbsp;Laxness&#38;nbsp;called "Christianity&#38;nbsp;Under the Glacier".&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Where a pastor from the&#38;nbsp;West of Iceland called&#38;nbsp;Jón&#38;nbsp;Prímus&#38;nbsp;said that&#38;nbsp;Snæfells-glacier was his church, and nature his gospel.&#38;nbsp;My design reflects&#38;nbsp;the philosophy of&#38;nbsp;Jón&#38;nbsp;Prímus, where the cliff shall become&#38;nbsp;the alter&#38;nbsp;and the sunlight its decor.&#38;nbsp;

Steel will make up both the internal and external structure where I&#38;nbsp;intend to build into it,&#38;nbsp;therefore celebrating what previously had been built. In front there will be&#38;nbsp;a courtyard delimited by plain&#38;nbsp;white&#38;nbsp;walls which&#38;nbsp;go through the building's&#38;nbsp;north wall, towards the cliff.&#38;nbsp;This will create&#38;nbsp;a space on the&#38;nbsp;east&#38;nbsp;side of the building dedicated to&#38;nbsp;bird life in the surrounding cliff;&#38;nbsp;a sanctuary where birds can be undisturbed, protected by the cliff and the architecture&#38;nbsp;below.&#38;nbsp;

According to the Arkís&#38;nbsp;plan,&#38;nbsp;the architectural firm who won the competition for the planning of the entire area of&#38;nbsp;Höfði,&#38;nbsp;there will be a green area below the cliff and&#38;nbsp;I&#38;nbsp;intend to&#38;nbsp;increase that and create a pond as a reference to the sea that brushed the shoreline before.&#38;nbsp;The&#38;nbsp;pond&#38;nbsp;will be a barrier between&#38;nbsp;humans&#38;nbsp;and birds&#38;nbsp;where&#38;nbsp;those two worlds&#38;nbsp;can&#38;nbsp;meet without&#38;nbsp;one&#38;nbsp;disturbing&#38;nbsp;the other.

The water will continue into the courtyard, creating&#38;nbsp;an equal flow between the cliff,&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;water,&#38;nbsp;and the building. The cliff becomes the building, and&#38;nbsp;the building becomes the cliff.

The building's exterior will be made of iron, which is maintenance free. Concrete will make up the upper-part of the building as well as the courtyard walls

 The surrounding flora will be a combination of wild plants and flowers for the bees to pollinate. The steel structure will stand bare in the courtyard, over time allowing the plants to climb up and become one with the steel. The church will operate as both a religious and spiritual sanctuary for anyone who seeks it. On the south side of the building is the culture center, which will facilitate a myriad of different services and projects, e.g., art exhibitions and public speaking events.&#38;nbsp;

By building a church upon an existing structure I am taking advantage of what is already in place and changing it into something self-sustaining and environment-friendly which will service and welcome both new inhabitants as well as old in Höfðinn. The Church will care for all earthlings, religious and secular people and most importantly animals. The church site offers a place to connect to nature, to be in silence, to admire the seasons and above all it will have a respect for nature.

		<description>VII. Höfðar, OPUS I&#38;nbsp;, 2020

Katrín Heiðar — katrinheidar18 (at) lhi.is&#38;nbsp;

O p u s&#38;nbsp; I

We are living in a moment of pandemic crisis due to the sprad of the Covid-19. It is real and it effects every possible aspect of our lives. Humanity will overcome it but the world will not be the same.&#38;nbsp; Recently much has been discussed in terms of public health in cities and places. For example, are places with high density worse during a pandemic, compared to the ones with a low density? Does density lead to unhealthy environments? Could the solution be higher density with less cars and more bike lanes, that provides better air quality?&#38;nbsp; Urban planners, architects and designers have new roles in responding to a new world with their design. New rules and policies ought to be created.&#38;nbsp; We are not only dealing with climate change, the rise of the sea level, migration of birds and water quality. Designers are faced with a new challenge. How can cities become a better place for our citizens and their health?&#38;nbsp; We can create big beautiful parks, wide bike paths and mixed use areas for pedestrians. However that is not enough. We should foster collaboration between organizations, policies and programs to build and promote healthy cities and a better place to live. For example, we can see how interdisciplinary work in Iceland at the time of Covid-19, has been crucial in the response to the crisis (1). &#38;nbsp;

In the course Höfðar 2030- Urban Lab Design Agency I&#38;nbsp; designed a project that could reflect the challenges of good and responsible design. The area Höfði is centrally located in Reykjavík.&#38;nbsp; Currently an industrial area,&#38;nbsp; except for Bryggjuhverfið, which is the only defined residential area in Höfði.&#38;nbsp; A cliff separates Höfði in two parts,&#38;nbsp; top of Ártúnshöfði and lower landfill areas to the north and the west.&#38;nbsp; According to a new city plan, Höfði will be a mixed residential area with around 15.000 residents and services.&#38;nbsp; Some light industries will remain. The new development is the first one in Iceland to be designed around a public transport infrastructure (Borgarlína), with less emphasize on the private car.

For my project I designed a Suzuki music school at Eirhöfði 17. Music defines us as it brings beauty and light to the soul. Music creates depth and warmth in the human existence and helps developing empathy.&#38;nbsp; Extensive research has shown the benefits of music education in young children. Music instructions accelerates the brain development, particularly the areas responsible for processing sound, language development, speech perception, and reading skills (2).&#38;nbsp; Dr. Suzuki has had great influence on music education.&#38;nbsp; In 1945, he developed a music teaching method, which still carries his name. The method is based on the idea that all children can learn to play an instrument just as they learn to speak their native language. &#38;nbsp;

In my project I reused an existing concrete building that reflects the characteristics of the area and should be preserved and not demolished.&#38;nbsp; It sits on the edge off the cliff&#38;nbsp; with great views over Reykjavík and the coastline to the north.&#38;nbsp; The structure was selectively deconstructed to create an open floor plan for seven semi-transparent classrooms, which invites for observation of students and their families. The building enhances conversations.&#38;nbsp; The space surrounding the classrooms is important for social interactions, reading and communicating. An extension in form of a pavilion was added to the west of the building.&#38;nbsp; The pavilion is made of glass and steel. It is a flexible space for small recitals, lectures, receptions etc.&#38;nbsp; A garden for reflection was created to the west for teachers, students and their families, as well as for pedestrians passing by.

The building is designed with natural colors.&#38;nbsp; Materials are mostly concrete, wood and glass. The original concrete walls are kept in their condition. Nature is emphasized and the house is welcoming and transparent.&#38;nbsp; Walking paths surround the building and connect to the main paths developed in the area.

The project is given the name Opus I and symbolizes the beginning of a change at Höfðar. It is my hope that Opus I transforms and acts as a catalyst in creating the social values of Dr. Suzuki into spaces for sharing stories, building trust, and forging a community. &#38;nbsp;

Dense cities need to have green open spaces for recreation and activities, respect for the environment and less emphasize on cars to promote healthy living. However,&#38;nbsp; perhaps more than ever, collaboration between organizations and creating programs for citizens are vital. Planners, architects and designers have huge responsibility. Places with activities like school, music school, high focus on education and civic participation are all important in creating a better healthy place to live.

		<description>IX. Höfðar, Bridge to the Edge, 2019

Kristyna Gerzova — kristyna19@ lhi.is

Thirteen stories have been consequently developed by the second year students in architecture at the Iceland University of the Arts.This is one of them.

&#60;img width="4896" height="3264" width_o="4896" height_o="3264" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7ab89d4acee8714c6f9bc05529ac98c67d7c92ce5ee8064332c464c7cc8a741a/04.jpg" data-mid="56111692" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7ab89d4acee8714c6f9bc05529ac98c67d7c92ce5ee8064332c464c7cc8a741a/04.jpg" /&#62;

Höfði used to be a
headland with a steep cliff in the edge of it. It constituted an
interesting, valuable landscape feature providing the opportunity to reach the
very edge, stand high above the water and watch the view. However, after
spreading the land towards the sea, Höfði lost this significance. There is even
going to be a road cutting the cliff and connecting the original and artificial
land. In this project, I am designing a bridge which continues in the height of
the former cliff and leads people to the new edge of the land. It is 504 meters
long and under the walkable top, there might be inhabitable units inserted in its
construction.&#38;nbsp;&#60;img width="4387" height="2468" width_o="4387" height_o="2468" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6ba67f5c391002f0fcf82232a96c924c69b885d9d55866991edf09b836bb140a/axo-copy.JPG" data-mid="56111593" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6ba67f5c391002f0fcf82232a96c924c69b885d9d55866991edf09b836bb140a/axo-copy.JPG" /&#62;

Thirteen stories have been consequently developed by the second year students in architecture at the Iceland University of the Arts.This is one of them.This project tells the story of the first time I visited Höfðar. Perhaps at first the place did not particularly impress me, but I was struck by a sense of its potential.

As far as I walked the roads that connected to the factories were surrounded by walls, meaning that there was no way to see what was happening inside. After some research I discovered that many of these factories produce very interesting products such as new construction technologies, specialized building materials, and wooden furniture. This discovery inspired me to design an exhibition space in which workers can exhibit their products. I wanted to make this a center for the advertisement of local products, but above all, a place where the identity of Höfðar can be remembered and celebrated.

The current use of the site is a large parking lot adjacent to Húsgagnahöllin which is a large commercial area that contains 8 shops and employs 96 people. This site is very well connected with the most popular modes of transport around Reykjavik and the surrounding municipalities, meaning it is likely to attract a high volume of visitors. This will increase further when the Borgarlína (public transport) is active. This makes it a valuable space for attracting attention to a business or products.&#38;nbsp;

I decided to shape my building as a new ground on the corner where the streets Höfðabakki and Vesturlandsvegur meet. The two intersecting streets both created and emphasize the shape of my building.

A minimum of 4 meters difference in height is needed between the road and the parking lot roof. This constraint led me to create a walkable pavement playing with a ramp that takes you to the highest point of the roof, and a staircase covered with plants and moss. This space becomes a new ground, which gives a sense of community as all citizenships are welcome to use this space.&#38;nbsp;

The tower on top of the roof is made of shipping containers currently scattered over Höfðar. It is mainly an iconic element which provides an incredible view over the entire municipality from the top floor. The containers are connected by a network of ramps and an elevator which are in turn connected to the foundations with a system of pillars. They are repeated inside the building as a supporting structure.

The idea is realistic, achievable, and economically viable. At present there are 294 containers in the area that could be repurposed to support the commerce of the local industries.&#38;nbsp;

This exhibition space displays the work of the many artisans of Höfði. It is intended therefore as a space to discover local products, or simply have a little fun reaching the highest point of the containers and enjoying the view. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

Thirteen stories have been consequently developed by the second year students in architecture at the Iceland University of the Arts.This is one of them.Mutualism

Mutualism is a biological term describing close and long-term interaction between two or more species where both species benefit. This project is about creating a situation where the current functions can continue to exist while densifying the area and introducing new functions, primarily residential that&#38;nbsp;can benefit all the residents of the neighbourhood.&#38;nbsp;Thinking of ways of&#38;nbsp;re-utilizing the existing as something beneficial&#38;nbsp;to cut down our Co2 emissions and therefore be a valuable resource for our society and the world.

By doing this there will be a situation where living and working happens in the same lot. A concept that is in no way new and is in fact a very old one, yet it&#38;nbsp;seems foreign in the&#38;nbsp;suburbs of Reykjavik where the modernist principle of zooning and division of activities still rules this part of the city.&#38;nbsp;My project&#38;nbsp;Mutalism&#38;nbsp;therefore&#38;nbsp;challenges&#38;nbsp;this division by creating&#38;nbsp;alternative way of living&#38;nbsp;based&#38;nbsp;on mixed uses, sharing, and&#38;nbsp;socialbility.&#38;nbsp;

 Mutualism is located in the industrial area of Höfðar which hosts today about 150 different small-size&#38;nbsp;companies. The&#38;nbsp;idea&#38;nbsp;is&#38;nbsp;to&#38;nbsp;allow&#38;nbsp;this&#38;nbsp;area&#38;nbsp;to&#38;nbsp;gradually&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;organically&#38;nbsp;transform&#38;nbsp;in&#38;nbsp;time&#38;nbsp;in&#38;nbsp;a&#38;nbsp;mixeduse&#38;nbsp;neighbourhood&#38;nbsp;built&#38;nbsp;in&#38;nbsp;tandem&#38;nbsp;with&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;development&#38;nbsp;of a&#38;nbsp;new&#38;nbsp;public&#38;nbsp;transportation&#38;nbsp;system&#38;nbsp;for&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;metropolitan&#38;nbsp;area&#38;nbsp;of Reykjavik: Borgarlína.

Mutualism offers&#38;nbsp;an&#38;nbsp;opportunity&#38;nbsp;to&#38;nbsp;rethink&#38;nbsp;not only&#38;nbsp;density&#38;nbsp;by allowing more to happen within the same area,&#38;nbsp;but also&#38;nbsp;to value&#38;nbsp;and sense for the existing built environment&#38;nbsp;and care for the emerging social interactions.

Building on these&#38;nbsp;ideas,&#38;nbsp;Mutalism&#38;nbsp;is a project for people&#38;nbsp;who&#38;nbsp;are&#38;nbsp;interested&#38;nbsp;in&#38;nbsp;owning&#38;nbsp;less&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;sharing&#38;nbsp;more.&#38;nbsp;This&#38;nbsp;does&#38;nbsp;not&#38;nbsp;necessarily&#38;nbsp;have&#38;nbsp;to&#38;nbsp;mean&#38;nbsp;sacrificing&#38;nbsp;essentials&#38;nbsp;or&#38;nbsp;even&#38;nbsp;luxuries&#38;nbsp;features but it means that by sharing aspects of our&#38;nbsp;daily chores we both contribute to the solution of the climate crises and we also develop social links important for an healthy society.&#38;nbsp;This could be an important option in a society where the nuclear family is not as dominant&#38;nbsp;as it has been,&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;therefore&#38;nbsp;different types of families&#38;nbsp;and co-habitation can take place.&#38;nbsp;The site of the project “Mutualism” is an industrial lot containing a building which hosts 3 workshops belonging to 3 different companies.

The goal of this project is to improve a certain situation by adding mass and function in a way that works with the existing and not against it. Creating a different situation where people live and work within the same lot. By doing this creating an urban landscape that feels more human, bringing the house fronts to the streets. This is a crucial step in&#38;nbsp;improving the public spaces&#38;nbsp;and defining them better.&#38;nbsp;Coming up with a solution that if repeated in some form, could make the area fit better within the context of a&#38;nbsp;neighbourhood&#38;nbsp;going through radical changes.&#38;nbsp;
